Unveiling the Beauty in Burnt Toast

Have you ever burnt your bread while making toast? If you made toast in your life, I am quite sure there was a time when you accidentally left the bread in the toaster or oven longer than you wanted. I recall when I had the toaster setting at one level and wanted the toast to get a little bit browner and instead, I made burnt toast. Also, there were times when I used the oven boiler to make toast. I would constantly look to make sure it was browning to what I called perfection, and it seemed like a split second, I, again made burnt toast.

Would you believe it? There was a time when I used to throw away burnt toast because the charred look of the toast did not look pleasing or appetizing, so I discarded it. Yes, and sadly, I threw the burnt toast in the trash.

I continued throwing away burnt toast until someone said, “don’t throw away the toast, just scrape off the burnt parts.” The last time I “burnt toast,” I looked at the charred parts and with tender care, I began to scrape off the burnt areas to reveal what was underneath – toast that no longer looked burnt. Isaiah 61:3 “…To give them beauty for ashes.” My tender care of scraping away the burnt areas or ashes of the toast uncovered the beauty underneath. In life, there are circumstances, situations, or people who might have figuratively burnt you. Family, friends, coworkers, managers, “church people,” pastors, ministers, etc. may have burnt you. You might have been burnt by circumstances in life, that could range from misunderstandings to divorce and from threats to lies. The list could go on and on. You might feel undervalued, unworthy, abused, or rejected. Although you went through those unfortunate situations, God wants to give you beauty for ashes. With those harsh and hardened areas in your life, God wants to tenderly and lovely unveil the beauty inside and outside of you.

Give God your cares and concerns. They might look like a mess but believe in His words and promises and allow God to heal those broken and wounded areas. God can heal the burnt or hurt areas in your life and give you “Beauty for Ashes” (Isaiah 61:3). Seasons Change - Summer 2023
